The cricket season was brought to a successful close with
a fairly easy victory over a moderate team of O.H.'s, the final
record for 11 matches being—5 won, 4 lost, and 2 drawn. As
the two latter would almost certainly have ended in victories,
the eleven may be fairly congratulated on their season's work.
This improved record was due to an all-round advance in the
School cricket, which was largely brought about no doubt by
the hard work at the nets of Shore, our new professional.
It is noteworthy that whereas last year there was only a
single score of more than 40, this year there were no less than
eight, these including two centuries. This advance in our
batting strength was accompanied by a marked improvement
in the change bowling, but the eleven were liable to bad
failures in the fielding line, dropped catches being far too
common, which was all the more grievous, as more than once
they showed that they could be sound, if not smart, in this
department.
As regards individuals Connop was far and away our best
all round man, and if he sticks to the game may easily be quite
good. Nutman, who was rather unlucky, was of great service
to the side, his fielding being extremely good. Porter played
several useful innings ; and Woods, our captain for next year,
was a good batsman at the end of the season.
Of the second eleven Wilmshurst and Carless should do
well, but both are less keen on the game than they should be.
Our best thanks are due to the Masters, who rendered
valuable assistance in the Club matches, and to the Headmaster
and Mrs. Eagg for their hospitality to both players and visitors
at Wyeside.
II.C.S. v. FKOOME VALLEY.
This match was unfortunately begun late on account of
examinations, with the result that time again robbed the
School of a victory. Froome Valley won the toss, and helped
by several over-throws started well, but were eventually all
out for 138, of which Dent made 47. The School were only
left an hour and a half to get the runs, but so fast did Mr.
Jones, Mr. Carson, and Connop score that 109 were obtained
for five wickets before time. The fielding was improved in this
match, but there was a great want of proper backing up.

H.C.S. v. THE MASTEES' XI.
On July 21st, to fill a vacant date, the Masters raised a
scratch eleven to play the School, which met with an over-
whelming and not unexpected defeat, seeing that several of
their men had played very little at all, and the majority had
had no practice this season. The bowling was soon collared,
and aided by several lives the School scored at a great pace,
Woods hitting finely when once set. Connop's bowling then
proved too much for the scratch XI., for whom Marrack hit
hard in the second innings. The Masters kindly entertained
the teams and visitors at tea. Unfortunately for the batsmen
the Committee decided before playing that the match should
not count for averages.
